Laboratory Technician - Variety, autonomy, and the opportunity to bring new tech to market

The Position:

The Laboratory Technician is responsible for contributing to new deign projects for products, processing equipment, adn custom manufacturing equipment as well as assisting engineers and scientists in the construction, repair, and modification of lab and pilot scale membrane test equipment.


This role is ideal for the accomplished laboratory technician who is experienced in data collecting data, running experiments and troubleshooting experimental setups as well as experienced with design, problem solving, and equipment maintenance.


Responsibilities for this role are broad and will take place in a highly interactive environment. You will provide assistance in a problem solving environment with process engineers, scientists, manufacturing team, and customers, in the development of new products and gas and liquid processing systems.

Position Benefits:

The pay range we are offering is $55,000-$60,000, based on experience and performance, plus stock options and bonus. CMS offers a suite of benefits including medical and dental, 401K, and flextime.

Responsibilities in an industrial R&D and manufacturing setting:

  • Conduct bench and field demonstration tests for new applications of membrane technology
  • Engage in problem solving with engineers, manufacturing team, and customers on development of new products, manufacturing processes, and quality control tests
  • Contribute to new design projects for products, processing equipment, and custom manufacturing equipment
  • Work closely with engineers in the construction, repair, and modification of lab and pilot scale membrane test equipment
  • Source and purchase basic equipment for lab and pilot scale equipment
  • Operation of pilot equipment including set up, data collection, and decommissioning
  • Support manufacturing:
    • Small scale assembly of hollow fiber membrane modules, involving operation of computer controlled equipment, general machining (manual lathe and mill), and use of epoxy systems
    • Perform Quality Assurance measurements on articles, including dimensional, gas, and liquid tests
    • Perform basic maintenance on manufacturing and test equipment
  • Operate in compliance with company safety and quality practices
  • Self-management of daily, weekly, and more long term tasks and goals


  • Associate Degree or higher in a related field and minimum of 3 years’ experience in a manufacturing or R&D environment, or minimum of 5 years performing similar job
  • Previous experience with design, problem solving, and equipment maintenance
  • Ability to read process flow diagrams, process instrumentation diagrams and single line electrical diagrams
  • Demonstrated ‘hands-on’ mechanical ability
  • Attention to detail for experimental protocols and data collection
  • Creative and self-motivated, excited about a variety, non-routine tasks, and working on multiple projects as a member of several teams
  • Ability to effectively communicate ideas and concerns to all members of the organization
  • Able to interpret and carry out Standard Operating Procedures and maintain clear, organized, and accurate written and computer records of designs, procedures, and test results
  • Preferred skills – Experience with solvent use, experience with safety reviews, gas chromatography, karl fisher testing, and experience with MS Office applications or similar software
  • Helpful experience – small volume manufacturing, gas and liquid delivery systems, membrane technology or applications, coatings, polymer processing, chemical processing, AutoCAD, equipment maintenance and calibration, machine control, laboratory and shop safety, general machining (mill and lathe), mechanical and electrical assembly
